about

We started tracking these songs one night in our dim, second-floor living room on Oakland Avenue in December of 2011. This album is for the places we lived, the people who also shared those spaces, and everything that happened during the three years it took to make it.

Track Name: Three Years
It took us all of three years just to see how ugly we are
It took us all of five years just to see we were never really in love

It took us all of three years just to see we never had hope
It took us all of five years just to see we're fucked

So we huddled 'round the kitchen
Tried to keep the winter out
But the snow that hits the window
Seems to creep inside the house
Our friends were here three weeks ago
Three weeks seems like a life
Three weeks weighs on your mind
On your mind

It took us all of three years just to see how ugly we are
It took us all of five years just to see we were never really in love

So we huddled 'round the kitchen
Tried to keep the winter out
But the snow that hits the window
Seems to creep inside the house
Our friends were here three weeks ago
Three weeks seems like a life
Three weeks weighs on your mind
On your mind

So we huddled 'round the kitchen
Tried to keep the winter out
But the snow that hits the window
Seems to creep inside the house
Our friends were here three weeks ago
Three weeks seems like a life
Three weeks weighs on your mind
On your mind

And I won't let you down
No I won't let you down

And I won't let you down, no I won't let you down
No I won't let you down, no I won't let you down
No I won't let you down, no I won't let you down
No I won't let you down, no I won't let you down
Track Name: The Colours I Earned
You lost it all that night
With the streets all lit up, there was beauty in your eyes
You said, "let me come back alive"
Could the soles of your shoes not spare for a lie?

We stuck around for the snow
'Me and You and Everyone We Know'
You said, "what have we got to show?"
Ground's still wet and our lungs are full of smoke

I see the colours I earned
Beyond these walls is the city that I yearn
You've been doing just fine I heard

We waited 'round for it all
We stumbled through the streets with no idea of what we saw
You said, "let's pick ourselves up before we fall"
Threw our ashes to the ground, walked away, and that was all

You lost it all that night
With the streets all lit up, there was beauty in your eyes
You screamed, "let me come back with my life!"

I see the colours I earned
Beyond these walls is the city that I yearn
You've been doing just fine I heard

You gave yourself that night
We were sitting out back at 3 a.m. and we were fine
You said, "let's give our whole selves to this life"

I see the colours I earned
Beyond these walls is the city that I yearn
You've been doing just fine I heard
The colours I earned
Track Name: Line in the Sheets
The corner of the bed you sit/ across the line in the sheets
Naked, drunk, and shivering/ the world between your knees
I do not love you/ every look just begs for leave
An evening chasing girls around the trees

Looks like a perfect night for this
Oh, I can't help anymore and here you are
Here we are
I guess that's all it is

When every look just begs for leave
And wanders off in the afternoon
You will understand why I'm the moon
Who chases the wind through the trees

Looks like a perfect night for this
Oh, I can't help anymore and here you are
Here we are
I can't help anymore

It was a perfect night for this/ until you threw it to the sea
It was a perfect night for this/ until you threw it to the sea

Looks like a perfect night for this
Oh, I can't help anymore/ I'm a little bit gone right now
Here we are
I can't help anymore

(It was a perfect night for this...)
Back to back I feel you move in
Across the line in the sheets
Track Name: Stairwell Song
Lately, there's been fire in those eyes
We'll try to ignore it for a while
If you love me then don't ever speak those words

In the past three years, there's been water flowing under
With no direction, at least not that we've discovered
And if it matters oh so much then why won't we show it?

Lately, there's been fire in those eyes
We'll try to ignore it for a while
If you love me then don't ever speak those words

A sentimental stain
Oh, what a shame we had to leave ourselves this way
Our greatest days forever tainted with disdain
An awful past which I would never wish to change
Track Name: Mars Oversea
I hate wires, bug, I learned to use them
You've broken my bones next to the kitchen
Mars is over the sea

Two years ago, bug, I sat in space
Rocking chair in Hughes, a lonesome blue egg
Mars is over the sea

The sea is not mine
Mars is not mine

This song would be 'Fellow Hollow' again
But it won't be me, won't be me, won't that not be me again?
Mars is over the sea
(The sea is not mine)

Too many miles, bug, and itches from the kitchen sink
Half grand a month for two fonds in one piece
Mars is over the sea
(The sea is not mine... and Mars is not!)

The sea is mine
Mars is not mine
But fitting with you is fine
Track Name: Hey Boy
It's a new year/ it's a really new year
Will I stay here?/ will I stay here?
It gets dark here/ it gets really dark here
I want to stay here/ I don't want to stay here

Oh my god
What'll it be then?
You say it's been quite fine
I say it's been quite fine

We are out here/ we are really out here
My life's here/ my whole life's not here
It gets dark here/ it gets dark
(It's been a little bit more than three years now...)
It gets dark here/ it gets dark
(It's been a little bit more than three years now...)

Oh my god
What'll it be then?
You say it's been quite fine
I say it's been quite fine

Maybe we're giving it all away
I don't know
What'll it do then?
(Everybody's drunk here...)
You say it's been quite fine
(It gets dark here)
I say it's been quite fine
(It gets dark here)

It gets -- oh, oh
Hey boy
Track Name: 1923
The chair where your mother's mother used to lie
Seems to fill this room with life
Seems to leave our bones dry

The room where you once knew everything
Is now filled with nothing
Won't even jog your memory

The tree that preserved their memory
For jars in the pantry
No longer tastes like anything

The street, a part of something
Waterford, nothing
That once meant everything

The day when he lost his dear life
You only wished that you'd cry
Well, your heart burst out that night

The coin that once brought you peace
Lies in a box, resting
Circa 1923
Track Name: Mars Oversea (Reprise)
A rocking chair in Hughes
I'm above my head in space
And from way, way up here
I guess I don't know

What if I could really see at myself from way up here?
Well, it won't be me, won't be me, won't that not be me?

Two years from now the sea and Mars are not mine
(Would you kindly go with me?)
Track Name: Roman Holiday
We always thought we'd end up here someday, but not like this
The rain it fell upon the grass, upon the streets, upon your face
We'll try to share the lives we've lived but hide what can't be glorified
We'll find we stumble back to when you said, "bye, bye, bye"

It's funny how the city sleeps tonight
Take a look around us, here we are
Of all nights, through all our lives
It's funny how you and I...
Track Name: Mistakenlyplaced
I still feel mistakenly placed
Trapped at the corners of kitchen sinks and mopping up
What years of lonely

Well, we're fucked up and stuck to this place
The cupboards and drawers cannot hold me like my lover can

Well, I think that I begin to exist with a new face
Forks and knives, and mugs of wine,
and mugs of wine, and mugs of wine
Trapped at the corners of kitchen sinks and mopping up
What years of lonely

I still feel mistakenly placed
I still feel that it gets dark here

It gets dark here
It gets dark here
Track Name: Three Years (Reprise)
It took us all of three years just to see how ugly we are
It took us all of five years just to see we were never really in love, oh
Track Name: Ten Pins
What would you do?

The sun's falling down/ on your lovely face
If you'd stick around/ not catch this plane

But in space, what would you do?
Dance on ten 'til you can't

Mars is falling down/ in an ocean world
Your hair's falling out/ with your bones uncurled

My Oakland home was a magic home
It was a toxic home, my Oakland home
Wyandotte my home, you are not my home
Why are you not my home?

What would you do?
Dance on, 'til you can't no more

My Oakland home was a magic home
It was a toxic home, my Oakland home
My Oakland home was a magic home
It was a toxic home, my Oakland home
Wyandotte my home, you are not my home
Why are you not my home?
Dance on ten pins in an ocean world
There's a goldenrain tree on the second floor

I still feel, I still feel
I still feel, I still feel

You've no idea how many times
I wore that shirt and was sad
I still feel, I still feel
I still feel, I still feel
Dance on ten pins, dance on ten pins
Dance on ten pins, dance on ten pins
Dance on, and I won't let you down
Dance on
